EVCC welcomes changes to make home car charging more accessible and government commitment to phase out petrol and diesel vehicles by 2040

  • EVCC welcomes the government’s Transport Decarbonisation Plan (TDP), with its commitments to ban the sale of all new fossil fuel powered road vehicles by 2040;
  • The government’s EV Homecharge Scheme shifting to focus on making home charging more accessible for leaseholders, renters and those living in flats from April 2022 is also welcomed as an important step in the transition to electric vehicles.

The Electric Vehicle Consumer Code (EVCC) has welcomed the government’s Transport Decarbonisation Plan (TDP), released yesterday [14 July 2021], with its commitments to ban the sale of all new petrol and diesel road vehicles by 2040. The government had already committed last year to a ban on the sale of all petrol and diesel cars by 2030.

These commitments came alongside changes to the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles’ (OZEV) EV Homecharge Scheme, which EVCC say will support leaseholders, renters and those living in flats to access electric vehicle charging at home. This is necessary in order to accelerate the transition to electric vehicles and meet the government’s own targets.

It is expected that, as more and more people switch from petrol and diesel cars to electric vehicles, there will be an increase in demand for the installation of home chargers. EVCC will give consumers the confidence of knowing that the products and installers they choose to do the installation are reliable and of a high standard.

Lorraine Haskell, Project Lead for the Electric Vehicle Consumer Code (EVCC), said: “EVCC welcomes the government's Transport Decarbonisation Plan and its commitment that all new non-zero emission road vehicles will be phased out by 2040.

“We are also delighted to see that OZEV's EV Homecharge Scheme will shift its focus to supporting leaseholders, renters and those living in flats from April 2022, making home charging accessible to more drivers.

“In this way, alongside giving consumers the confidence to install chargers at home by ensuring installers adhere to high standards through EVCC, we can work together to help accelerate this transition.”
